The Medway 11+ Test is the selective entrance exam used by grammar schools in the Medway area for Year 6 pupils seeking admission into Year 7. It’s designed to assess a child’s academic ability across three key areas:
English: Includes comprehension, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.
Mathematics: Covers a broad range of topics aligned with the Key Stage 2 curriculum.
Reasoning: A mix of verbal, non-verbal, and spatial reasoning to test logic and pattern recognition.
The test is created specifically for Medway Council by GL Assessment, and it’s only available to be taken at designated Medway test venues. Children must be registered in advance, and the test typically takes place in September.
You can find full details, including registration dates, test format, and scoring, on the official Medway Council 11+ page.
The Kent 11+ Test is the entrance exam used by grammar schools across Kent to assess Year 6 pupils for admission into Year 7. It’s designed to identify students who are academically suited for a grammar school environment—typically the top 25% of the ability range.
Test Format:
The Kent Test includes the following components:
English & Maths Paper
A one-hour multiple-choice paper split into two sections:
English: Focuses on comprehension and literacy skills.
Maths: Covers Key Stage 2 topics with problem-solving and reasoning.
Reasoning Paper
A separate one-hour multiple-choice test that includes:
Verbal Reasoning
Non-Verbal Reasoning
Spatial Reasoning
Writing Task
A 40-minute writing exercise (including 10 minutes planning time). This is not marked but may be used by a headteacher panel during appeals or reviews.
Scoring
Students receive standardised scores for English, Maths, and Reasoning. These are age-adjusted to ensure fairness. A combined score determines whether a child is grammar-assessed.
You can find full details, including registration dates, test samples, and guidance, on the official Kent County Council Kent Test page.
Familiarisation papers and practice papers each provide useful support when preparing for an 11+ test. We recommend children familiarise themselves with the multiple-choice layout of the test, content and examples of some types of questions they will face. To give all children the opportunity to experience sample questions across a range of question types in advance of the test.
You can find Familiarisation Materials including practice tests for each subject here - Practice Papers
